Series background & context
The Nun of Your Business Mysteries have one of Dakota Cassidy's most instantly memorable premises. Sister Trixie Lavender is an excommunicated former nun, she is sometimes dealing with a demon inside her, and she opens a tattoo shop with her demon best friend Coop. If that sounds like a lot, that is because it is, and the series gets a lot of mileage out of that exact overload.
The setting helps. Trixie and Coop build their new life in Cobbler Cove, a district in Portland, Oregon, where they run Inkerbelle's Tattoos and slowly become part of the local community. That gives the books a strong cozy backbone. There is a shop, a neighborhood, a cast of regulars, and a reason for everyone to keep running into one another.
But this is still Dakota Cassidy, so the cozy framework is constantly getting knocked sideways by the paranormal. Trixie is haunted by what happened to her before the series begins. Coop is loyal but not exactly ordinary company. Livingston, the talking owl, makes sure there is never too much calm for long. And then, of course, there are the murders.
Those murders are what keep the series moving from book to book, but the deeper hook is Trixie's struggle to build a life that feels safe and permanent. She wants roots. She wants friendship. She wants a future that is not defined only by possession, exile, and the worst thing that happened to her. That gives the books more heart than the setup alone might suggest.
If you like paranormal cozies that are a little weirder than average, Nun of Your Business is a great fit. It has a tattoo shop, a demon sidekick, church complications, community ties, and just enough emotional ache under the jokes to keep the series from feeling weightless.
