Series background & context

The Witchless In Seattle Mysteries follow Stevie Cartwright, an ex-witch who has lost her powers and gone back to her hometown of Ebenezer Falls, Washington. That loss is the whole reason the series works. Stevie is not a sleek all-powerful magical investigator. She is broke, rattled, trying to get her footing, and stuck improvising.

Her main companions are a tiny bat familiar named Belfry and a dead British ex-spy named Winterbottom, whom only she can hear at first. That pairing gives the books their real spark. Belfry brings chaos. Win brings dry intelligence, buried feelings, and a constant reminder that the afterlife in this world is not tidy.

The series begins as a paranormal cozy, with Stevie stumbling into murders and helping spirits, but it gradually grows into a bigger ongoing story. Win's past matters. Stevie's old life matters. So do the people who gather around them, including other ghosts, pets, family, and the many residents of Ebenezer Falls who keep ending up in trouble.

That long arc is part of the fun. Readers are not just watching a new mystery every book. They are also watching Stevie and Win's relationship shift from wary partnership to something deeper, stranger, and eventually much more settled. Later books raise the stakes with missing people, magical consequences, holiday chaos, and the problem of what happens when a ghost stops being just a ghost.

Even when the plot gets more intricate, the tone stays approachable. Cassidy writes these in a chatty first-person voice that feels conversational without losing momentum. The books like their banter, their holiday decorations, and their recurring jokes almost as much as they like a corpse in an inconvenient place.

If you want a cozy paranormal series with a strong romantic spine, Witchless In Seattle is easy to recommend. The mysteries matter, but the real engine is Stevie building a new life out of the pieces of the old one, with a bat, a spy, and a lot of supernatural nonsense along the way.
