Author bio

Helen Harper grew up in Scotland with her nose in science fiction and fantasy books. The mix of real life and impossible things caught her early, and so did the kind of heroine who could walk into trouble, make a mess, and still get the job done.

Before writing full time, Harper worked as an English teacher. Her teaching life took her through the UK and abroad, including time in Japan and Malaysia. That background shows in the clean, quick way her stories move. She likes rules, systems, and magical bureaucracy, but she also likes poking holes in them.

Then came Mackenzie Smith.

Harper's first major series, Blood Destiny, introduced Mack, a fierce young woman tangled up with shapeshifters, mages, fae, vampires, and the very complicated Lord Corrigan. The books helped establish the pattern many readers now look for in her work: a stubborn heroine, a hidden supernatural world, danger that keeps escalating, and a slow-burn thread of romance that never completely takes over the plot.

She kept building from there. Bo Blackman moved into a grittier London, following a private investigator whose cases pull her into vampire and daemon politics. Highland Magic turned to a fractured Scotland of Sidhe clans and old grudges. The Lazy Girl's Guide To Magic went lighter and funnier, with Ivy Wilde, a sofa-loving witch who would rather avoid heroics if at all possible.

That range is a big part of the appeal.

Harper often writes women who are underestimated, overworked, or pushed into roles they never asked for. Emma Bellamy in Brimstone Bound starts as a police officer assigned to London's Supernatural Squad, then learns death is not going to behave normally around her. Kit McCafferty in Waifs And Strays looks like a harmless cat lady in Coldstream, but that is a very bad assumption. Daisy Carter in Tattered Huntress is a low elf trying to survive, until treasure hunting and elf politics shove her into a much larger game.

Her settings move between London, Manchester, Glasgow, rural Scotland, the Highlands, and the magical border city of Coldstream. The tone shifts too. Some books are darker urban fantasy mysteries. Some are comic paranormal adventures. Some lean into romance and found family. Most have sharp dialogue, oddball side characters, and at least one supernatural authority figure who badly needs to be annoyed.

Harper is a member of the Alliance of Independent Authors and has built much of her career through independently published urban fantasy. She also teaches creative writing workshops. After years abroad, she now lives in Edinburgh with what she cheerfully describes as far too many cats.
