Wisteria Island

2021
After a humiliating incident at work, nurse Danielle Wright flees to a private retirement island, only to discover eccentric residents, a patient but secretive owner, and a chance to rebuild her life among people who refuse to act their age.
Series background & context
The Wisteria Island series is set on an unusual Lowcountry experiment, a private island designed as a retirement haven where older residents live in community, far from busy mainland life. What sounds orderly on paper turns out to be anything but, which is part of the charm.
In Wisteria Island, nurse Danielle Wright arrives on the island after a humiliating event at her hospital job leaves her desperate to escape familiar faces. Taking a position as the island’s on site nurse seems like the perfect way to hide out and regroup. Only later does she learn she is the eighth nurse hired in a short span of time and that none of her predecessors lasted more than a few days.
The residents are the reason. Wisteria’s population is a collection of strong willed, eccentric, and often hilarious seniors, people who do not consider themselves fragile and do not appreciate being managed. The island’s founder, Bennett Alexander, built the community as a kind of experiment in independent aging, but he did not count on how hard it would be to keep staff around. Danielle finds herself pulled into disputes, friendships, and late in life romances while trying to figure out whether this strange place might actually be where she belongs.
In Wisteria Winds, hurricane season bears down on the island. As a storm approaches, practical concerns like evacuation plans crash into the reality that many residents are reluctant to leave their homes. Danielle and Bennett scramble to prepare, and familiar faces like Morty and Gladys add both chaos and heart. The book leans into questions of responsibility, community, and what it means to protect people who value their independence.
Wisteria Wedding pushes the series into celebration mode as Danielle and Bennett plan their own long awaited ceremony. The residents, of course, insist on being involved. Good intentions, clashing opinions on decorations, a competitive bake off, and surprise visitors make the lead up to the wedding anything but simple. At the same time, family issues and lingering doubts test the couple’s resolve in believable ways.
Overall, Wisteria Island feels lighter and more comedic than some of Rachel Hanna’s purely emotional series while still offering moments of genuine poignancy. Aging, purpose, and chosen family sit at the center. If you enjoy quirky ensembles, later in life romance, and the idea of a slightly chaotic island full of people who refuse to act their age, this series is a fun place to land.
