Series background & context
The Arcadia Trilogy shifts away from small towns and into a dystopian future, co written with Bella James. These books blend science fiction, romance, and coming of age themes, following a young heroine who challenges the rigid system that governs her world.
The story is set generations after a set of devastating wars poisoned the earth. Humanity survives under the rule of the Plutarch, a powerful leader who lives in the domed capital city of Arcadia. Outside the dome, people like Livy Bane grow up in rural provinces, working the land and doing their best to avoid the armored enforcers who patrol their villages.
In The Choosing, all sixteen year olds from Livy’s province are rounded up and taken to Arcadia, where they will be trained and evaluated. Tradition says the Plutarch will select one girl from among them to be his new mate, the next “Royal Mother.” For some, it is an honor. For Livy, it is a terrifying prospect that forces her to decide whether to keep her head down or resist.
As the trilogy continues in The Rebellion and The Revolution, Livy uncovers darker truths about the regime, the real history of the “Before Times,” and the cost of keeping Arcadia comfortable while the rest of the world struggles. She is drawn into an underground resistance movement, navigating moral gray areas, unexpected alliances, and complicated romantic feelings along the way.
These books carry a different tone from Rachel Hanna’s coastal and mountain stories. The stakes are higher, with physical danger, political intrigue, and questions about justice and sacrifice. At the same time, familiar threads remain, such as found family, loyalty, and a heroine learning to trust both herself and others.
The Arcadia Trilogy is best read in order, since each book builds directly on the events of the previous one. If you enjoy dystopian worlds with a strong female lead and a romantic subplot woven through the action, this series offers a distinct but connected facet of the author’s work.
