Series background & context
Wicks Hollow is the kind of small town that looks cozy from a distance and a little unsettling once you stay long enough. It sits near Lake Michigan, full of old houses, local history, and residents who seem to know more than they say. In Colleen CM Gleason's hands, that makes it a very good place for romance, murder, and ghosts.
Every book brings at least one of those.
The series is built as connected romantic suspense. Each story follows a different couple, so the focus shifts from book to book, but the setting and tone keep everything tied together. Some heroines inherit houses or businesses. Some come to town for a fresh start. Some are already rooted in Wicks Hollow and suddenly find themselves dealing with threats that feel both supernatural and all too human. What links the books is the pattern: a haunted place, a buried secret, a dangerous present-day mystery, and a relationship that has to survive all of it.
Gleason keeps the supernatural element close to the ground. These are not huge fantasy worlds with elaborate rules. They are ghost stories in familiar places, a lake house, an inn, an antiques shop, a lighthouse, a theater, a clock tower. The haunting usually matters because the past still matters. A spirit is unsettled, an old crime was never truly addressed, or local legend turns out to have more teeth than anyone expected. That gives the books a nice mix of coziness and tension. You can settle into the town, but you never quite relax.
The romance side is just as important. Wicks Hollow is full of second chances, unexpected pairings, and people who meet at awkward moments in life. A lawyer on the verge of burnout, a writer on deadline, an actress with a risky dream, an innkeeper trying to start over, these are grown-up characters with real baggage. Their relationships tend to build through shared danger, stubborn attraction, and the gradual realization that they might actually be better together than apart.
The town itself becomes part of the appeal. Familiar faces return, friendships deepen, and the local world starts to feel lived in. Later books especially give a sense of a wider community, one where everyone has opinions, history, and at least a little gossip. Even so, the stories keep their suspense moving. Someone is usually hiding something, and sometimes the ghost is not the most dangerous presence in the room.
If you want a clean category label, Wicks Hollow sits somewhere between cozy mystery, contemporary romance, and supernatural suspense. If you want the simpler version, it is a series about attractive people trying to solve murders and put restless spirits to bed in a very charming town by the lake. That turns out to be a pretty reliable recipe.
