Series background & context

The Gardella Vampire Chronicles begin with one of Gleason's clearest and strongest ideas: what if a young woman on the edge of polite society life learned that her real inheritance was vampire hunting? From there the series builds into historical paranormal adventure with a strong romantic pulse, moving through London and beyond as danger grows larger and more personal.

Victoria Gardella is the heart of it.

She is a Venator, part of a line of vampire hunters charged with fighting the undead. What makes her interesting is not just that she can wield a stake. It is that she has to do so while navigating the expectations of a 19th-century world built to keep women ornamental, sheltered, and obedient. Gleason gets a lot of tension from that split life. Victoria has to manage society, family expectations, and her own desires while doing violent, secret work at night.

The books balance action and atmosphere well. There are ballrooms and gowns, but also dark streets, hidden enemies, old rivalries, and serious physical danger. As the series goes on, the scope widens and Victoria's battles stop feeling like isolated incidents. The vampire threat becomes more organized, the emotional consequences deepen, and the question of who can be trusted gets harder to answer.

Romance is woven tightly into all of this. Victoria's connections with the men around her are not an afterthought. They shape the stakes, complicate her choices, and keep the series from becoming only a monster-hunting story. Duty and desire keep colliding, and Gleason is especially good at showing how exhausting it can be to carry both. The result is a heroine who does not feel detached from ordinary longing just because she has extraordinary responsibilities.

There is also a sense of lineage running through these novels. The Gardella name matters, and so does the weight of history behind it. That makes the series feel bigger than a single romance or a single conflict. Victoria is part of an ongoing fight, and every victory seems to open a new cost.

For readers, the appeal is pretty easy to name. These books offer vampires, historical atmosphere, strong series momentum, and a heroine who is never merely along for the ride. If you like your paranormal fiction with more corsets, more family legacy, and a lot of moonlit danger, this is the shelf to head for first.
