Series background & context

The Envy Chronicles is one of the names attached to Gleason's dark post-apocalyptic paranormal world, the same broad story space readers may also see connected to New Vegas. The name fits. These books are full of hunger, longing, power, and the dangerous things people want when the world has already broken apart.

The setup is grim but compelling.

After cataclysmic storms and earthquakes, a handful of survivors emerge into a future that is harsher, stranger, and more supernatural than the one they lost. Las Vegas, and the world around it, has changed almost beyond recognition. Powerful beings called the Strangers cast a long shadow over everything. Communities survive by improvising, hiding, or fighting back. And the people at the center of the series are changed themselves, often carrying abilities they never asked for.

That blend of ruined-world suspense and paranormal romance is the series' identity. Gleason does not treat the apocalypse as wallpaper. It shapes every decision. Food, shelter, mobility, trust, all of it matters. But within that harsh setting, the books keep returning to relationships. Each installment tends to bring a different couple to the front, which lets the emotional stakes stay sharp even as the larger conflict expands. People fall in love, or close enough to it, while running, hiding, resisting, and trying to understand what has become of them.

The Strangers give the series its most unsettling edge. They are not just generic villains. They represent a warped new order, one that makes the world feel fundamentally unsafe and pushes the heroes toward resistance. That gives the books a constant sense of pressure. Even quieter scenes carry the feeling that something dangerous is still moving just offstage.

At the same time, the series is not all doom. There is chemistry, grit, and a real pull toward hope, even if hope usually has to fight hard for space. Gleason likes capable characters under pressure, and this series gives her plenty of room to test them.

So if you are looking for the darker end of her catalog, this is a good place to browse. Expect a shattered world, strange powers, frightening enemies, and romances that have to prove themselves under extreme conditions. The title says Envy, but the deeper theme is really survival, and what survives in people when almost everything familiar is gone.
