Series background & context

The White Cliff Bay books are classic Holly Martin, full of twinkling lights, sea air and neighbours who know far too much about one another but mean well all the same. The series is set in a small seaside town perched on the edge of the cliffs, inspired by the coastal communities on the Devon and Cornwall border.

Each novel follows a different couple, but recurring faces and shared events tie their stories together. In Christmas at Lilac Cottage we meet Penny Meadows, an ice carver who lives alone in a pretty cottage with fairy lights strung along the eaves. Her life is quiet until Henry and his teenage daughter Daisy arrive to rent the annex. As Penny prepares for an ice sculpting competition and the big Christmas Eve ball, she has to decide whether she is brave enough to let this guarded new family into her heart.

Snowflakes on Silver Cove looks at the same week in White Cliff Bay from another angle. Romance novelist Libby Joseph is stuck with writer’s block and a fading belief in love, even as she becomes closer to her kind, slightly clueless neighbour George. Their plan to stage a series of pretend dates around town to inspire her work quickly becomes more real than either of them expects, with skating, Christmas markets and a lot of mixed signals.

The summer brings a shift in mood with Summer at Rose Island. Here the focus moves to Darcy, who arrives in White Cliff Bay hoping for a fresh start and falls in love with the crumbling lighthouse out on Rose Island. Its reclusive keeper, Riley, wants nothing to do with outsiders. Their push pull relationship plays out against barbecues on the sand, swims in the bay and a community campaign to save the lighthouse.

White Cliff Bay itself feels like a character. There is a tangle of steep streets, cosy pubs, a gossip network that carries news faster than any phone and a sense that once you arrive it is very hard to leave. Shared scenes, like the Christmas ball or a town festival, appear in more than one book, letting readers spot familiar moments from new perspectives.

The tone across the series is light and hopeful. Martin mixes laugh out loud scenes with gentler notes of loneliness, grief and second chances. Each novel can be enjoyed on its own, but reading in order deepens the pleasure of seeing old couples settled and new romances beginning as the seasons change over the bay.
