Author bio

Holly Martin was born in Birmingham, England, and grew up moving between different parts of the country before settling on the Devon coast. Today she lives in a little white cottage by the sea, a setting that finds its way into many of her stories.

At school and university she studied media, imagining a bright future in television or film. The reality was less glamorous. Her first jobs were as a hotel receptionist and then in a bank, roles that came with long hours and little joy. Watching a colleague receive a carriage clock for fifteen years of service made her realise she did not want the same life.

So she walked away. Holly went back to university to train as a teacher, swapping front desks and balance sheets for lesson plans and playground duty. Teaching in primary schools gave her a new sense of purpose, but it also came with the weight of responsibility for thirty children at a time.

After four years in the classroom she changed direction again, this time running history workshops. One day she might dress as a Viking, the next as an Egyptian high priestess, travelling up and down the country to bring the past to life for school groups. Those long drives and hours on the motorway turned into quiet pockets of time where stories began to form in her head.

Writing had always been there in the background, but a turning point came when she entered a short story competition linked to a travel anthology. Her winning story became the seed of One Hundred Proposals, and showed her that the worlds she imagined on buses and trains could speak to readers too.

Another big break followed when her novel The Guestbook at Willow Cottage won a Valentine’s competition run by a digital imprint of a major publisher. That book deal opened the door to a steady stream of new titles and festival appearances, including shortlists at the Festival of Romance for new talent, best romantic read, best ebook and innovation in romantic fiction.

Alongside her well loved seaside romances, Holly also writes for younger and crossover readers. Her The Sentinel series blends modern life with secret Guardians, prophecies and high stakes battles, while her later novels lean into cosy, contemporary settings. Books like Christmas at Lilac Cottage, Spring at Blueberry Bay and Sunrise over Sapphire Bay share a love of tight knit communities, seasonal celebrations and second chances at happiness.

Across her work you will find recurring themes. There are found families built from friends and neighbours, characters starting over after heartbreak, and towns where everyone knows your business but will still show up with cake when you need it most. There is often a dash of magic too, whether that is a Christmas wish, a village legend or an enchanted treehouse.

Holly now writes full time, usually with a cup of tea close by and the sea just a short walk away. She continues to dream up new coastal villages, islands and enchanted woods, inviting readers back each time to fall in love all over again with a fresh pair of characters and a familiar, comforting world.
