Series background & context
The Sentinel series shows a very different side to Holly Martin, swapping cosy seaside villages for secret councils, superhuman Guardians and a teenager carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders.
At the centre of the story is Eve, a girl who believes she is ordinary until a horrific coach crash changes everything. She is pulled from the wreckage by her teachers, who suddenly display impossible strength and speed. In the days that follow she discovers that almost everyone in her life, from neighbours to dentists, has been placed there to defend her.
These people are Guardians, created and trained to protect Eve because of what she really is. Hidden behind the normal streets and school corridors is the Oraculum, an ancient council that engineered Eve’s existence and wrote the prophecies that mark her out as the Sentinel, a weapon designed to stand between humanity and a monstrous enemy.
Across the books we watch Eve struggle to balance this destiny with the ordinary things she still wants, like friendship, love and a chance at her own future. Her best friend Seth becomes her anchor as new powers surface, visions of the future grow darker and the Oraculum’s motives start to look less pure than she was led to believe.
Later instalments raise the stakes further when a second Sentinel, Adam, is created to replace her. Adam is Eve’s half brother, raised in captivity and fuelled by resentment. His arrival turns the world of the Guardians upside down and forces Eve to ask whether her enemy is the creature she was built to fight, the council that controls them both, or the damaged boy who mirrors her own power.
Throughout the series Martin keeps the pace brisk. There are high speed chases, aerial battles, escapes through burning buildings and clashes with terrifying foes, but also quieter moments of loyalty and sacrifice as Eve’s friends decide how far they are willing to go to keep her alive.
Read in order, The Sentinel, The Prophecies, The Revenge and The Reckoning form one continuous arc about fate, free will and what it costs to save the world when you are still trying to work out who you are.
