Series background & context

Vampire Enforcement Agency imagines a world where vampires are no longer completely hidden from human society. That does not mean people trust them. Public knowledge has created new rules, new fear, and a need for someone to deal with vampires who break the fragile peace. The Vampire Enforcement Agency, or VEA, is meant to do exactly that.

The peace is more fragile than it looks.

The series opens with Captured by the Vampire, a prequel about Zoe and Rowan. Rowan is an isolated, starving vampire who is captured after attacking someone in public. Zoe works at the jail where he is held and reveals proof of vampires to the world. What begins as a dangerous discovery becomes personal as Zoe learns that Rowan is not the monster she expected, even while public reaction puts his life at risk.

The main storyline begins with Compelled by the Vampire. Roric leads the VEA and believes in enforcing the rules that allow humans and vampires to live beside one another. After intercepting a rogue attack, he finds Caroline dying and turns her into a vampire. Caroline has hated vampires since losing her parents to one, so her transformation leaves her fighting both Roric and the life she now has to live.

Then the rogue problem gets worse.

In Obsessed with the Vampire, Caroline is gaining control of her bloodlust and wants to help newly turned vampires. Roric wants to keep her safe, but his protectiveness creates friction as rogue attacks increase. Possessed by the Vampire raises the stakes again when a new Vampire Training Academy becomes a target and the rebellion threatens the treaty between vampires and humans. Caroline becomes central to the conflict as well as to Roric's choices.

The series combines paranormal romance with urban-fantasy-style conflict. Its vampires live in a society with agencies, blood resources, laws, training, and public relations problems. That framework lets the books explore what happens when the people charged with keeping order have to admit that the system is failing some of the people inside it.

Read in order, starting with Captured by the Vampire if you want the full setup before moving to Compelled by the Vampire. The core Roric and Caroline story runs through the later books, while the wider conflict with rogue vampires grows from book to book. Expect romance, vampire politics, danger, and characters forced to question what justice looks like when neither side fully trusts the other.
