Author bio

Valerie Anand was an English writer of historical fiction, also known to mystery readers as Fiona Buckley. Born in London on July 6, 1937, she spent part of her childhood in Kent before the Second World War changed family life. Her father joined the RAF, while she and her mother stayed with relatives in Surrey.

She wanted to be a writer from the age of six.

At fifteen, Anand saw the 1952 film Ivanhoe. She later recalled that it helped her decide exactly what she wanted to write, historical novels. The Middle Ages, royal succession, old loyalties, and the way large political events press on ordinary lives would remain central to her work for decades.

After leaving school, she worked as a shorthand typist at Odhams Press. Journalism and editing followed, including work on in-house publications for Heal's and an engineering company. She wrote alongside a day job for years, then became a full-time author in 1989.

Her first novel, Gildenford, began a sequence set around the Norman Conquest. It follows people caught up in the power struggles before 1066, rather than treating history as a parade of kings alone. Later books, including The Norman Pretender, The Disputed Crown, and King of the Wood, return to England's uneasy adjustment to Norman rule. Anand was interested in what conquest meant at ground level, for farmers, servants, families, and people whose choices were limited by birth.

That interest in long family memory shaped her six-book Bridges Over Time sequence. Beginning with The Proud Villeins, it traces descendants of a Norman captive through changing centuries. The novels move from medieval bondage and land ownership to religious conflict, family life, colonial trade, and women's struggle for room to make their own decisions. The House of Lanyon and The House of Allerbrook, set on Exmoor, also use local families to show how national turmoil reaches rural communities.

She also wrote standalone historical fiction. Crown of Roses explores the final years of the Wars of the Roses and Richard III's brief reign. To a Native Shore moves into a more modern setting and examines prejudice faced by Sikh people in Britain. Later, as Fiona Buckley, she wrote Late Harvest, a long family story set in Exmoor during the Georgian era.

Then came Ursula.

Writing as Fiona Buckley, Anand created the Ursula Blanchard mysteries, set in Elizabethan England. Ursula is Queen Elizabeth I's half-sister, a widow, mother, landowner, and occasional secret agent. Starting with The Robsart Mystery, also published as To Shield the Queen, the series combines murder cases with court politics, religious tension, foreign threats, and the daily risks of Tudor life.

Anand married Dalip Singh Anand in 1970. She learned to fly at London Biggin Hill, and she remained closely connected with the landscapes of southern England, especially Exmoor. She died on January 13, 2024, leaving behind a large body of fiction that looks past famous names to the people living in history's shadow.
