Bridges Over Time Books in Order

Valerie Anand's Bridges Over Time is a six-book historical family saga about descendants who inherit more than a name. Beginning with The Proud Villeins, the series follows one line of English families across centuries, from the years around the Norman Conquest to the modern era. Each novel introduces new central characters, but memories, stories, property, and old injuries keep linking their lives.

The first book begins with Sir Ivon de Clairpont, a Norman knight captured in England and sold into bondage in Northumbria. His longing for freedom becomes part of the family's inheritance. His descendants may not always know the full history, but they live with its consequences, especially the divide between people who own land and people tied to it.

Freedom is the thread that holds the books together.

In The Ruthless Yeomen, the family remains bound to a feudal system that restricts their work, marriage, and hopes for advancement. Women of Ashdon carries the story through the Wars of the Roses and the Tudor years, when women in the family face the cost of marriages made for land and security. The Faithful Lovers moves into the upheaval of the English Civil War and follows a Cornish household changed by an unexpected survivor from a distant world.

The later novels broaden the setting further. The Cherished Wives explores marriages, property, and women's limited choices in eighteenth-century England, with part of the story reaching into British India. The Dowerless Sisters continues the family history into a later period, again focusing on women whose futures are shaped by money, class, and the expectations placed on them.

These books are interested in ordinary people as much as major historical events. Kings change, armies pass through, religious rules harden or loosen, and economies shift. Meanwhile, characters have to plant crops, protect children, negotiate marriages, endure bad employers, and decide what they are willing to risk for a little more control over their lives.

The scope is broad, but the stories stay close to family. Anand uses each era to ask a practical question: what does a person owe to the past, and what can they change for the people who come after them?

Start with The Proud Villeins. It establishes the family history and the dream of freedom that echoes through every later generation. The books work best in order, because the pleasure comes partly from recognizing how an old choice, a piece of land, or a family tale resurfaces in a new century.
