Series background & context
Set during the reign of Elizabeth I, the Ursula Blanchard novels are historical mysteries with a sharp, practical heroine at their center. Valerie Anand wrote them as Fiona Buckley, beginning with The Robsart Mystery, also published as To Shield the Queen. The first book opens in 1560, when the suspicious death of Amy Robsart, wife of Robert Dudley, draws Ursula into danger at court.
Ursula is not simply a detective dropped into Tudor costume. She is a young widow and mother who needs an income, a lady in Queen Elizabeth's household, and later the queen's half-sister. Those ties give her access to royal secrets, but they also make every inquiry personal. She has responsibilities at home, people she loves, and good reasons to wish that powerful men would stop handing her impossible jobs.
They do not stop.
Early books put Ursula in the orbit of Sir William Cecil and, later, Francis Walsingham. She investigates Catholic conspiracies, suspicious households, political murders, and threats connected with Mary, Queen of Scots. Her work often starts with a domestic problem, an anxious friend, a missing person, a strange death, or trouble on an estate. It soon opens onto the larger pressures of Elizabethan England, where religion, inheritance, marriage, foreign policy, and survival are all tangled together.
The series moves forward through time, from the early 1560s into the 1590s. Ursula's circumstances change. She marries, is widowed, raises children and wards, manages property, and builds a trusted household. Familiar allies such as Roger Brockley and Fern Dale help keep the stories rooted in daily life, even when a case leads to court, the Tower, a remote village, or a dangerous trip abroad.
The tone is lively but not cozy in the modern sense. These are mysteries in a world where accusations of treason or witchcraft can destroy a family, and where the queen's safety is never just a distant political issue. Still, Ursula brings common sense, stubbornness, and a dry awareness of how inconvenient espionage can be.
Readers can begin with The Robsart Mystery / To Shield the Queen to follow Ursula's life from the beginning. Most later novels offer a complete central mystery, but the strongest experience comes from reading in order. The long view lets the political landscape shift around Ursula while her home life and hard-won relationships develop alongside the investigations.
