Author bio

Valerie Keogh grew up in Dublin in a busy household, one of nine children in a family where books were part of the furniture. Her mother was an Agatha Christie fan, so the first adult novels Valerie pulled from the shelves were classic whodunits, and the puzzle of crime stories lodged in her mind early.

As a young woman she trained as a nurse in Dublin and spent years on hospital wards, often working long shifts with very little sleep. Those years gave her an eye for small details, the way people talk when they are frightened, and the quiet heroism of everyday work. Even when writing was just a daydream, she was filing away scenes, voices, and settings.

Later, while still nursing, she went back to university as a mature student. At University College Dublin she studied English, then stayed on to complete a master’s in American literature. Balancing essays with night shifts was not easy, but the mix of practical work and close reading suited her. It also gave her confidence that she could handle big projects, chapter by chapter.

In 2006 she moved to the UK after marrying an Englishman and eventually settled in Wiltshire, not far from Bath. She continued to work as a nurse, including in nursing homes, and for a time also worked as a sales representative for a medical company. The English countryside, the canals and small villages around her new home, would later become part of the backdrop to several books.

For years she wanted to write but kept stopping and starting, throwing away early efforts because they never felt good enough. At one point she made herself a simple promise: finish one full manuscript without giving up. That story, about Dublin detective Mike West and a woman whose husband has vanished, became the seed of No Simple Death. Once she had proved to herself she could reach the end of a novel, more stories followed.

She first self-published crime novels featuring Garda Sergeant Mike West in Dublin and the darker Hudson and Connolly books, in which nurse and serial killer Nicola Connolly develops an uneasy alliance with Detective Inspector Tom Hudson. Those early books built a small but loyal audience and led to traditional publishing deals. In 2018 she finally left nursing to write full time, swapping shifts on the ward for full days at the desk.

Keogh now writes across two main strands. The Dublin Murder Mysteries follow Mike West through complex cases in the city’s suburbs, mixing police work with a slow-burn personal story. Her stand-alone psychological thrillers, including Secrets Between Us, The Housewife, The Perfect Life, The Nurse, The Lodger, and many more, dive into domestic tensions, unreliable memories, and the quiet ways ordinary lives can go badly wrong.

Travel and place matter to her. She once took several months off to circle the globe, beginning on the Trans-Siberian railway from Moscow to Beijing, then heading on to Australia, Fiji, Hawaii, and a long drive across the United States. Echoes of those journeys appear in settings from Cornwall to Dublin and beyond. At home in Wiltshire she loves walking along the Kennet and Avon canal, letting story ideas settle as she walks.

These days she lives with her husband and a famously spoilt cat named Fatty Arbuckle, writing full time but still drawing on decades of nursing experience whenever she steps onto a ward or into a care home on the page. Her books keep returning to the same questions: what people hide, what they will do to protect those secrets, and how thin the line can be between victim and perpetrator.
