Author bio
T. L. Payne is an American author who specializes in fast paced post apocalyptic thrillers about ordinary people caught in extraordinary breakdowns. Her stories revolve around EMP strikes, cyberattacks and long term blackouts, and how families and small towns cope when the systems they rely on disappear overnight.
She made her fiction debut in 2019 with the short story Sudden Chaos, then quickly followed it with the novel Turbulent. Both belong to the Days of Want universe, which introduced many readers to her blend of survival detail, family drama and escalating national stakes.
In the Days of Want series, Payne follows college student and runner Maddie Langston and her family as they fight their way out of a darkened Chicago and toward a cabin in the Missouri Ozarks. The books trace how one panicked airport afternoon grows into a years long struggle, moving from desperate escapes in Turbulent to community level conflicts in Turmoil and Uprising, and then to wider plots in Mayhem and Defiance.
From there her fictional world branches out. The Fall of Houston novels shift the focus to single father Will Fontenot, his son Cayden and paramedic Isabella as they try to escape a collapsing Houston while foreign backed enemies move in. The Gateway to Chaos series centers on pre med student Raine Caldwell in St. Louis, following her from a burning high rise in Seeking Safety through frozen streets, crowded shelters and hard won rural alliances.
Payne also writes the Survive the Collapse books about former detective Sam Wallace, his wife Lauren and their son Charlie in eastern Tennessee. Other series, including Reign of Darkness, Desperate Age, Conquer the Dark and Black Sky Event, explore new characters and regions while staying in the same broad universe of grid down disasters and slow burning political fallout. Across all of them she tends to favor overlapping timelines and subtle crossovers that reward long time readers.
Her fiction leans heavily on practical survival challenges. Characters worry about water sources, medical care, firewood and food storage as much as they worry about firefights. Families argue over when to help strangers, how much to share and what to do when the people in charge are either absent or dangerous. Readers who enjoy nuts and bolts preparedness alongside emotional stakes often point to that mix as a big part of her appeal.
Payne writes full time from a small farm tucked into Missouri's Mark Twain National Forest in the south central part of the state. Living close to the woods gives her a steady stream of small, concrete details that show up in the books, from the sound of gravel under truck tires to the way a rural community pulls together during a long winter.
When she is not drafting or researching the next story, she likes to be outside. Hiking, camping and long walks through the forest help her think through new plots and settings. She has talked about combing the fields with a metal detector and occasionally having to sprint after a wayward sheep in pajama pants and muck boots, a tiny slice of chaos that would feel right at home in one of her chapters.
Travel also feeds her work. Trips through the Midwest, the South and the Rocky Mountain region help her imagine how different landscapes would respond to the same catastrophic event, whether that means frozen city streets in St. Louis or empty ranch roads in Wyoming. With dozens of novels and novellas now in print and more on the way, Payne continues to build a sprawling but closely connected vision of how ordinary people might endure when the lights go out for good.
