Series background & context
Days of Want drops readers into a United States where coordinated EMP and cyberattacks knock out power, phones and modern life in a single afternoon. The story begins in Turbulent, when college runner Maddie Langston is stranded at Chicago's airport as the lights die and panic spreads. From there the series follows one family and the people around them as they try to outrun the first wave of chaos and carve out a place to live in the new world.
In the opening books, Maddie leans on the endurance she once used for ultramarathons just to get out of the city. She falls in with a small group of travelers and takes responsibility for a ten year old girl who has no one else left, turning what might have been a solo escape into a desperate, makeshift family. While Maddie fights north toward Missouri, her brother Zach and their mother Beth face their own broken roads and dangerous strangers as they try to reconnect.
Most of the tension comes from ordinary choices that suddenly feel life or death, like whether to trust the person offering a ride or share the last of the food.
Once the Langstons reach their family cabin in the Missouri Ozarks, the focus shifts from pure flight to defending a home. Hunted and Turmoil dig into what justice looks like when there are no functioning courts, as the group tangles with hostile officials, missing children and predators who see the lawless landscape as an opportunity. New allies drift in, old enemies reappear, and the tight circle around the cabin slowly expands into a fragile community.
As the series moves through Uprising and Upheaval, the danger grows wider than one backwoods county. Prison riots, power hungry local leaders and incoming waves of maximum security inmates turn Texas County into a powder keg. Survival now means organizing defenses, making uneasy deals and deciding how far they are willing to go to protect their own.
Later books like Mayhem and Defiance pull Maddie's group into a broader fight that reaches beyond the Ozarks. Months after the grid failure, they find themselves linked to national plots, foreign threats and military operations that connect with events in Payne's Fall of Houston world. The stakes feel larger, but the cost of each choice is still counted in friends, family and the little town they have worked so hard to keep alive.
Across the series you can expect a lot of boots on the ground survival detail, from scavenging supplies and fortifying fences to figuring out how to keep food on the table through brutal winters. Underneath the action, the books keep circling the same questions: how you hold on to your morals when you are hungry, who you become when the grid never comes back, and what makes a place worth defending. If you like long running, character driven post collapse stories that stay rooted in one extended family, Days of Want gives you that arc from the first frantic hours to the hard work of rebuilding.
