Series background & context

Conquer the Dark begins with an EMP attack that leaves people on opposite sides of the country facing different versions of the same emergency. Ayden Miller is in New York City, while his girlfriend, Mia, is in Wyoming with her three young sons. T. L. Payne follows their efforts to survive and find a route back to each other as the loss of electricity grows into a wider conflict. The series combines escape, difficult travel, and the defense of people who cannot easily protect themselves.

The first challenge is getting out alive.

In Collapse, extreme sports athlete Ayden has returned to New York because his mother is ill. His experience with difficult natural conditions offers little certainty when Manhattan fills with frightened people trying to leave. He and his sister, Clara, need to escape an urban environment where familiar routes are overwhelmed. Far away, Mia and her sons are stranded on a highway in Wyoming's Wind River region. The contrast establishes the series' two central pressures: movement through crowded places and exposure in remote ones, with danger coming from other people as well as the surrounding conditions.

As the books continue, escaping the immediate blackout is only the beginning. Ayden and Clara must make decisions about companions, destinations, and the risks of traveling through a country whose rules have changed. Their circumstances make cooperation necessary without making strangers easy to trust. Mia has her own responsibilities and cannot wait passively for help to arrive. Her children's safety gives every threat a personal urgency. The split story lets the reader follow both the journey toward loved ones and the work of keeping those loved ones alive in the meantime.

War adds another layer to the survival problem. Later installments bring enemy forces, threatened refuges, and the difficulty of finding somewhere that can remain safe. The landscape shifts toward Wyoming's mountains, where the same terrain that offers concealment can make supplies, shelter, and winter travel harder. The characters must consider whether hiding can protect them or whether resistance is becoming unavoidable. That question makes the series more than a single journey after a disaster: the survivors are also trying to decide what sort of future they can defend.

Begin with Collapse and follow the continuing sequence through Ruin, Carnage, Desolation, Resistance, and Recompense. The books build on earlier journeys and relationships, so publication order provides the clearest path. Expect post-apocalyptic suspense with family ties, separation, and armed conflict at its center. Ayden and Mia's connection gives the action a continuing purpose even as the scale of the danger changes.
