Series background & context
Black Sky Event follows the Carlisle family after solar superstorms bring down the power grid. The disaster separates people who would normally be able to call, travel, or organize help, leaving them to make decisions without knowing what is happening to relatives elsewhere. T. L. Payne uses that separation to follow several experiences of the same national crisis. A scientific warning becomes a practical struggle for food, safety, shelter, and a way back to the people who matter.
The family bond survives the blackout, but it cannot erase the distance between them.
In Utter Darkness, NOAA scientist Carson Carlisle understands the danger of the storm but cannot prevent the collapse it causes. His sister Willow is in Washington, D.C., where she must escape spreading disorder and try to connect with her boyfriend, Knox. Their mother, Bee, is in Arkansas, reluctant to leave her home as fear begins to divide the surrounding community. These different starting points give the series a wider view than a story centered on one prepared household. Each person has local problems that demand attention before the family can think about coming together.
The later books follow how quickly those problems accumulate. Travel becomes dangerous, and staying in place can be dangerous too. Carson and Julie face difficult choices while moving through a country where ordinary protections have weakened. Willow's route takes her through unfamiliar territory, with Knox and other companions involved in her efforts to reach safety. Bee's commitment to her community creates responsibilities beyond looking after herself. The story keeps personal loyalty beside the needs of people who cannot simply leave when supplies and services fail.
By Utter Decimation, the family's paths involve Dallas, Kentucky, and the Arkansas Ozarks. A struggling hospital and a supply mission toward Little Rock show how survival extends beyond finding one secure building. Medical needs continue after electricity and dependable transport disappear. In Utter Dominion, the approach of winter makes a lasting refuge more urgent. Looking beyond Cherokee Village means assessing land, resources, and unfamiliar people, with trust itself becoming a risk. The setting changes as the survivors move, but shortages follow them.
Read the books in order, beginning with Utter Darkness, because the family journeys continue across the series. Expect post-apocalyptic survival fiction centered on separated relatives, threatened communities, and the pressure of making decisions without reliable information. The solar disaster begins the crisis; the continuing story concerns what the Carlisle family can preserve as the systems around them stop working.
