Series background & context

The Thorne Brothers series is built around separation and reunion. Goodman starts with the idea that three brothers were parted when they were young, then lets each book uncover a little more of what that loss cost them. The romances matter, of course, but the family story is the engine under the hood.

That makes the trilogy feel especially linked.

My Steadfast Heart introduces Colin Thorne, who has crossed the ocean on a mission of revenge and ends up entangled with Mercedes Leydon at a troubled English estate. Colin is the brother most obviously carrying the family quest, and the novel gives the series its central question: how do people find one another again after years of anger, confusion, and reinvention?

My Reckless Heart turns to Decker Thorne and shifts the action toward ships, smuggling currents, and transatlantic danger. Jonna Remington is a businesswoman, not a decorative heroine, and that practical edge suits the series well. Goodman likes couples who have to negotiate power as well as passion.

Then With All My Heart brings the final movement west to San Francisco, where Grey Janeway, a man without clear memory of his past, crosses paths with Berkeley Shaw, whose unusual gift has helped Colin and Decker keep searching. The book closes the emotional circle without making that reunion feel easy.

Across the trilogy, Goodman moves from England to the sea lanes to Gold Rush San Francisco. That sweep gives the books room for revenge plots, family secrets, and a little adventure, but the deepest stakes are always personal. The brothers want answers, and even more than that, they want a place to belong.
