Bitter Springs (Jo Goodman) Books in Order

The Bitter Springs books are small-town Western romances with a strong sense of place. Goodman sets them in Bitter Springs, Wyoming, and lets the town do a lot of the work. The Pennyroyal saloon and hotel, the ranches beyond town, the children underfoot, the local feuds, and the constant sense that everybody knows a little more than they say all give the series its texture.

It feels lived in from the start.

In The Last Renegade, saloon owner Lorraine Berry hires protection for a town being terrorized by a powerful rancher and his sons. Kellen Coltrane steps into that job, but the book is not just about gunplay. It is about what happens when two wary people decide the town is worth defending, and each other may be worth risking even more for.

True to the Law keeps the town in view while turning toward a quieter mystery. Private detective Cobb Bridger arrives looking for a missing woman and finds schoolteacher Tru Morrow, who may or may not be the person he has been sent to uncover. The pleasure here is in the slow unraveling, both of the case and of the people at its center.

Then In Want of a Wife brings in a mail-order bride, Jane Middlebourne, and a rancher, Morgan Longstreet, who expects practicality and gets much more than that. Their marriage begins as an arrangement, but the town around them, with all its watching eyes and buried histories, makes the relationship feel bigger than a private bargain.

What ties these books together is community. Goodman likes frontier peril, but she is just as interested in schoolrooms, hotel kitchens, porches, pastures, and the way people make a place for one another. That is what gives Bitter Springs its staying power.
