Series background & context

The Dennehy Sisters series is one of Goodman's richest family sagas. At its center are five sisters, all daughters of Jay Mac Worth and Moira Dennehy, and all named Mary something. That detail tells you a lot about the books. They are full of family feeling, private jokes, strong loyalties, and the social complications that come from living half inside respectability and half outside it.

The family is the series.

The books move from New York society into the American West and back through all kinds of trouble. Wild Sweet Ecstasy / Only My Love begins with Mary Michael, a newspaperwoman with a sharper edge than polite society expects. Rogue's Mistress / My Heart's Desire follows Mary Renee, whose story adds more danger and emotional collision. Forever in My Heart gives Maggie Dennehy a romance shaped by memory loss, misunderstanding, and an arranged marriage.

Always In My Dreams shifts to Skye Dennehy, while Only In My Arms brings the series to Mary Francis, the oldest sister, whose choice to leave the convent gives the final book a distinctive pull. By then the series has built such a strong sense of family that every new pairing also feels like a change in the whole household.

What makes these books memorable is not only the romance. Goodman gives Jay Mac and Moira real presence, and the sisters are allowed to be different from one another in meaningful ways. Some are bolder, some quieter, some more reckless, some more dutiful.

If you like big family casts, recurring characters, and historical romance with both emotional depth and adventure, this is a very good Goodman series to settle into. It has scale, but it also has warmth.
