Passion's Bride Books in Order

This short series is best understood as Goodman's War of 1812 corner, even if the local series name comes from the original title Passion's Bride. Readers may also know that first novel in its later form, The Captain's Lady. Either way, these books are built from ships, privateers, wartime loyalties, hidden identities, and romance that has to survive a lot more than flirtation.

The opening book, The Captain's Lady, begins with Alexis Danty and Tanner Cloud, and it has exactly the kind of high-adventure setup the title promises. Alexis is driven by revenge, Tanner is trying to protect her, and neither plan holds for long once she takes matters into her own hands. The result is a romance with motion in it, from the deck of a ship to the larger upheaval of a nation at war.

Velvet Night shifts into the war's aftermath and becomes more intimate and mysterious. Kenna Dunne, traumatized and hunted, escapes England with Rhys Canning and lands in Boston under the protection of a relationship that must do more than look convincing. The book keeps the suspense alive while asking what peace even means after so much fear.

What unites these two stories is mood. Goodman is interested in peril, yes, but also in reinvention. Her heroines are not waiting quietly for events to happen. They flee, disguise themselves, investigate, resist, and make trouble for anyone who underestimates them.
