Series background & context

This series takes the Druidverse and runs it through a post-apocalyptic grinder. THEM follows Aidan Scratch Sullivan, an Afghanistan veteran and former Army Ranger who would rather keep to himself on his family's Texas ranch than think too hard about what he has seen. Then the bombs fall, the dead rise, and quiet becomes impossible.

From there, survival is the whole job.

The setting is a wrecked Texas full of highways, ranch land, ruined towns, hard little strongholds, and bad country where monsters own the dark. At first glance it looks like zombie fiction, but Massey keeps widening the threat. The walking dead are only part of the problem. Vampires, werewolves, rogue soldiers, slavers, and all kinds of paranormal predators turn the landscape into something closer to horror fantasy than standard end-of-the-world adventure.

Scratch is a good lead for that kind of story because he is competent without ever feeling untouchable. He knows how to fight, improvise, and protect the people under his care, but the books keep charging him for every win. The series grows from a family rescue story into a broader war for safe zones, communities, and the last workable scraps of human life. Later books bring in characters like Gabby Mendoza, whose own survival arc adds a fresh angle to the same brutal world.

The tone is harsher than Colin McCool's urban fantasy, but it still carries some of Massey's usual traits. There is motion, banter, loyalty between damaged people, and a real sense of place. Texas is not just background here. It shapes how people travel, hide, fight, trade, and try to rebuild. That gives THEM a rough, regional personality instead of feeling like generic apocalypse scenery.

There is also a fun shared-universe wrinkle. This is not separate from the Druidverse, it is one of its future branches, and later connections to Colin make that clearer. So if you like your monster fiction with guns, grit, undead pressure, and a little crossover payoff waiting down the road, THEM is where Massey lets the world go feral.
