The trickster angle matters because Colin is now entangled with beings who treat rules, reality, and other people's plans as things to be rearranged for sport.

That gives the cycle a different feel from the original Colin McCool run. The core personality is still there, the sarcasm, the stubborn loyalty, the Texas voice, but the canvas is broader and stranger. You get more extraplanar travel, more apocalyptic fallout, and more of the sense that Colin's choices are reshaping whole worlds, not just getting him through one bad week in Austin.

Even so, the books stay grounded in character. Colin is still trying to protect his people, live with past mistakes, and figure out what responsibility looks like when you have enough power to make everything worse by accident. Druid's Curse and Druid's Bane keep that balance well, mixing big supernatural stakes with practical worries like allies, home, and the cost of keeping a city from falling apart.

This is not the best place to begin Massey if you are brand new, because the emotional payoff depends on knowing who Colin already is. But if you have read the earlier books and want the next phase of his story, The Trickster Cycle is where the Druidverse gets wilder without losing the hero who holds it together.
