Colin McCool Books in Order

The Colin McCool series is the main spine of Massey's Druidverse, the place to go if you want Colin's full novel-length story rather than just companion tales or spin-offs. It begins with Junkyard Druid, where Colin has already walked away from monster hunting and tries to stay invisible inside his uncle's scrapyard in Austin. He has good reasons for that retreat. Magic has cost him plenty, and the supernatural world rarely lets anyone leave clean.

Then a faery queen drags him back in.

From there the series settles into a rhythm that works very well. Each book gives Colin a fresh problem, a rogue vampire, missing children, a murder case, a trip into Underhill, an enemy faction making a power play. At the same time, a much larger story keeps moving underneath the surface. Colin's old wounds, his fae curse, his apprenticeship, and his place in Austin's hidden magical order all develop book by book instead of resetting each time.

Austin matters here. Massey's version of the city has a lived-in, boots-on-the-ground feel, but beneath ordinary life sits a tense political map. The fae court wants control, the vampire coven and werewolf pack protect their own interests, human hunters and wizards have their grudges, and the gods are never as distant as they should be. Colin is forever caught in the middle, which is a good job for a protagonist who has strong opinions and a weak sense of self-preservation.

The series also tracks a clear growth arc. Colin starts out clever, damaged, and underpowered, which makes his wins feel earned. He learns from mentors like Finnegas, makes costly mistakes, gathers allies, and slowly becomes someone the old powers of the world have to take seriously. By the time you reach books like Druid Arcane and Druid Master, the scale is much bigger, but the heart of the story is still one stubborn druid trying to protect his people.

Expect snark, fast action, and a lot of Celtic myth filtered through modern urban fantasy. The books like their monsters ugly, their politics messy, and their heroes bruised but moving. If you want the clearest starting point for Massey's fiction, this is it. Read the Colin McCool novels in order, and the later branches of the Druidverse make much more sense.
