Series background & context
This page is best understood as Colin McCool's companion shelf. The Junkyard Druid books are the shorter works that sit around the main novels, filling in backstory, side adventures, and character moments that the bigger books only hint at. Some are prequels, some are short story collections, and some follow supporting players who deserve more room than a few scenes in the main arc.
They matter more than their page counts suggest.
The best place to see that is at the beginning. Druid Blood and Blood Scent show Colin before the main series fully kicks in. You get the earlier version of him, still younger, rougher, and not yet buried in the junkyard life readers meet in Junkyard Druid. Those books help explain his losses, his habits, and why stepping back into the supernatural world costs him so much.
The later volumes widen the lens. Collections like Blood Circus, Blood Ties, and Blood Bound move around Colin's circle, giving more space to characters such as Belladonna, Hemi, Crowley, and other familiar faces from Austin's hidden world. Instead of one long central case, these books tend to work through linked adventures, odd jobs, myths, and aftermath stories that deepen relationships and make the Druidverse feel more lived in.
That makes the tone a little different from the core Colin novels. The stakes can still be dark, creepy, or violent, but the shorter format often lets Massey be looser and more playful. You might get a grim monster hunt in one story and something weirdly funny in the next. Even the holiday and pack-centered entries, like Colin McCool Saves Christmas and Blood Moon, still plug back into the same shared setting and recurring cast.
Austin remains the anchor. The fae court, the vampires, the werewolves, the hunters, and the constant pressure of old magic sitting just under modern Texas all stay in view. If you enjoy companion stories that explain references, strengthen side characters, and make a big series world feel fuller, the Junkyard Druid books do exactly that. They are not the main road through Colin's story, but they make the trip richer.
