Series background & context

The Vampire and Angel Wars is DeRosa in post-apocalyptic mode. The world is already wrecked when the story begins. Vampires attacked first, then angels arrived claiming to be saviors, and humanity ended up trapped between immortal powers that care far less about rescue than control. Into that mess steps Liv, a teenager trying to hold on to the last pieces of the life she knew.

The first book kicks off with urgency rather than slow discovery. Liv loses safety fast, and when the person she cares about most is taken, the series becomes a rescue story, a survival story, and a war story all at once. Declan, the mysterious stranger who ends up at her side, gives the books their romantic tension, but he is never just a simple protector. His secrets matter, and the series is smart enough to treat trust as something costly.

This world is scorched from page one.

The setting matters because the conflict is bigger than one city or one family. DeRosa builds a landscape shaped by ruined human communities, immortal armies, and a desperate search for something that might finally shift the balance. The mythical shield at the center of the later books gives the story a quest structure, but the emotional core stays with Liv as she learns what the war has turned people into.

One nice thing about this series is how clearly the stakes escalate. The first book is about surviving and rescuing. The second turns into a hunt and a test of destiny. The third pushes everything toward sacrifice, strategy, and the question of whether humanity can be saved at all. That progression gives the trilogy a clean, urgent shape.

Compared with DeRosa's Azar stories, this series feels leaner and more openly dystopian, but it still keeps the romantic tension and fast pacing her readers usually want. If you like angels who are not especially angelic, vampires as part of a wider war machine, and heroines who keep moving even when the world is ash, this one is worth your time.

Read Wings and Destruction, Blood and Rebellion, and Souls and Salvation in order. The prequel novella, Monsters and Mayhem, works as an extra glimpse into the world, but the main trilogy is the backbone of the story.
