Series background & context

The Soul Seekers is Alyson Noël's four-book young adult fantasy set largely in Enchantment, New Mexico. Its heroine is Daire Santos, a teenager whose life has always been unsettled because she travels with her mother from one film job to the next. Just when she turns sixteen, the strange dreams and visions she has tried to ignore become impossible to hide.

Nothing about Daire's new reality feels ordinary.

She sees glowing figures, hears crows speak, and experiences moments when time seems to freeze. Her mother does not know how to help, so Daire is sent to stay with her grandmother, Paloma, in New Mexico. Paloma knows that Daire is not losing her mind. She is the last Soul Seeker, born into a family role that allows her to travel between life and death.

Daire's training takes place against a desert backdrop where history, family stories, and spiritual traditions shape the present. She learns to understand her gifts, builds friendships, and finds a connection with Dace Richter, the mysterious boy who has appeared in her dreams. Dace is kind, brave, and deeply connected to Daire's future, but his family has a long history of dark magic.

That makes the romance complicated from the beginning. Cade Richter, Dace's brother, is a growing threat, and Daire cannot avoid the conflict simply because she cares about Dace. The series asks whether love can survive when one person's family is tied to the danger the other person has been born to stop.

Fated starts Daire's journey and introduces Enchantment. Echo puts more pressure on Daire and Dace as hidden loyalties come to light. In Mystic, Daire has to take her responsibilities more seriously while the danger to Dace becomes personal. Horizon brings the long conflict with the Richters toward its final confrontation.

The tone is romantic and supernatural, with visions, spirit worlds, animal guides, and escalating threats. At its center, though, it is about a girl learning that the parts of herself she feared may also be the parts that make her capable of protecting others.

Read from Fated onward. The books tell one connected story, and every volume depends on Daire's earlier discoveries about her family, her power, and the people of Enchantment.
