Author bio
Alyson Noël grew up in Orange County, California, in a family with three daughters. The beaches, malls, private schools, and social pressures of Southern California later became useful material for her early young adult novels.
She was a reader before she was a writer. In sixth grade, Judy Blume's Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. showed her that a story could feel personal, funny, and honest all at once.
But writing wasn't her first career. After high school, Noël spent years moving around and trying a long list of jobs. She lived on Mykonos, Greece, where she made jewelry and hand-painted T-shirts, and later worked as a flight attendant based in Manhattan. Those years gave her plenty of airports, new cities, missed connections, and people-watching to draw on.
She eventually turned those experiences into fiction.
Her first young adult novel, Faking 19, follows an Orange County teenager whose glamorous weekends in Los Angeles hide a much messier life. Art Geeks and Prom Queens, Kiss & Blog, Laguna Cove, and Cruel Summer also look at friendship, popularity, family trouble, and the uneasy work of figuring out who you are when everyone at school seems to be watching.
Readers who want a more realistic story often find their way to Saving Zoë, about a girl reading the diary left behind by her murdered sister. Noël also wrote the adult novel Fly Me to the Moon, using her airline background for a story about a flight attendant rebuilding her life after a painful surprise.
Then came Evermore in 2009. The book introduced Ever Bloom, a teenage girl who survives the accident that kills her family and develops unsettling psychic abilities. Her relationship with the mysterious Damen Auguste opens into The Immortals, a paranormal series built around love, past lives, grief, danger, and the question of whether destiny can be changed.
That world grew. The younger Riley Bloom books follow Ever's dead sister as she trains to guide troubled souls in the afterlife. In The Soul Seekers, Daire Santos heads to New Mexico and learns that her visions are part of an inherited calling. Noël later shifted toward Hollywood suspense in the Beautiful Idols trilogy, then into time-travel mystery at Gray Wolf Academy in the Stealing Infinity books.
Her stories often put young people in glossy, high-pressure places, then ask them to look past appearances. A popular girl may be lonely. A perfect romance may come with a dangerous secret. A strange ability might be the very thing that helps someone find a home.
Noël has also written middle grade fantasy, including The Bone Thief, Five Days of Famous, and Field Guide to the Supernatural Universe. Across age groups, she returns to outsiders, complicated friendships, family ties, and characters learning that being different does not have to mean being alone.
