New Beginnings
by Linda Byler
2026
Amos Beiler grows up feeling like a failure in his Amish community, slow in school and mocked for his weight and acne. Leaving home to work for an English couple, he gains confidence and new freedoms, then finds his heart caught between lively Skye and sweet Amish Anna.
Series background & context
The Seekers series is one of Linda Byler’s newest ventures and follows Amos Beiler, a young Amish man who has never quite fit in. From childhood, Amos has been slow in school, overweight, and painfully aware that he disappoints his parents, sisters, teachers, and employers. The nickname and teasing may be subtle, but he hears the message clearly.
In New Beginnings, Amos finally reaches a breaking point. Certain that he will never be "good enough" in his home district, he leaves and accepts a job as a live in groundskeeper for an English couple. In the outside world he discovers simple but profound freedoms: driving a pickup truck, wearing different clothes, eating what he likes, and not being under constant scrutiny.
The change is not just outward. With steady work and encouragement, Amos begins to grow stronger and more confident. At the same time, the cost of leaving becomes more obvious. He knows that nothing will wound his family more than seeing him live as an English man, and every Friday night youth singing he skips feels like a small death.
Two women shape his next steps. Skye, an English young woman who loves the outdoors and wears a camouflage baseball cap, treats Amos with a refreshing lack of judgment. Anna, an Amish girl he meets later, is kind, grounded, and unmistakably appealing in a quieter way. Their presence forces Amos to ask what he wants, not just who others expect him to be.
The sequel, The Ties That Bind, widens the lens to include the Beiler family back home. Raymond, the gentle father, tries to hold the household together while Amos’s mother, Lydia, lets her anxieties and controlling habits drive wedges between siblings. Lavina and Cathy, Amos’s sisters, wrestle with their own dreams and missteps as family tensions build.
As Amos considers whether and how to reconnect with his Amish roots, he must weigh not only romantic possibilities with Anna and perhaps Sarah Yoder, but also the spiritual questions underneath everything. Does he believe in the God his parents taught him about, or is he simply afraid of disappointing them yet again? Is there a way to live truthfully without cutting himself off from the people he still loves?
True to its title, this series is about seeking: for identity, belonging, faith, and forgiveness. It takes readers into both an Amish household under strain and the wider world where someone like Amos can disappear or flourish. The tone is compassionate, making room for the hurts on all sides while pointing toward the hope that even long standing patterns can change when people are willing to be honest and brave.
