Heart of Ice begins as Rakel is pulled into a growing conflict involving the Chosen, an army of magic users threatening her homeland. She has to leave the controlled loneliness of her mountain and work with people she would rather keep at a distance. Along the way, she gains allies, including the blunt and unpredictable Phile, and confronts the difference between being feared and being respected.
