Series background & context
Hall of Blood and Mercy begins the interconnected Magiford Supernatural City stories. It follows Hazel Medeis, a young wizard with weak magic, a sharp survival instinct, and a family depending on her. In Magiford, supernatural houses and factions have their own power structures, and Hazel's small amount of magic makes many people assume she is easy to control.
They are wrong about that.
After Hazel's parents die, she becomes responsible for her wizard house. Her cousin seizes the opportunity to stage a coup, taking Hazel's relatives hostage and forcing her to flee. The only powerful figure willing to offer help is Killian Drake, the feared leader of a vampire house and someone Hazel has every reason to distrust.
Magic Forged introduces their difficult alliance. Killian needs Hazel's unusual abilities for his conflict with the local fae, while Hazel needs the training and protection his household can provide. She is determined to rescue her family and reclaim her home, even if working with vampires means stepping into an unfamiliar world of old rules and dangerous favors.
The trilogy continues in Magic Redeemed and Magic Unleashed. Hazel grows in confidence and magical skill, but the threats around her grow too. Her fight is personal, involving her family and house, yet it also draws her into Magiford's wider supernatural tensions. Vampires, wizards, and fae do not always agree on what justice looks like.
Hazel and Killian's relationship develops slowly. She does not become helpless because she has support, and he does not become harmless because he cares about her. Their different strengths make the partnership work, while the vampire household offers a found-family element around the central conflict.
Start with Magic Forged and read straight through. The story is complete in three books, and its characters later appear in other Magiford series. It is a good choice for readers who like underdog heroines, vampires with complicated loyalties, supernatural politics, and romance that takes time to earn.
