Gates of Myth and Power Books in Order

Gates of Myth and Power returns to Magiford, where supernatural politics and ordinary city life overlap in messy ways. This trilogy follows Chloe, a young supernatural who can shift into the form of a black housecat. It is a useful ability for hiding, but it does not make her feel safe in a city crowded with stronger magical species.

Then an elven king adopts her. Or thinks he does.

Chloe's accidental encounter with Noctus changes everything. Noctus is powerful, guarded, and part of a supposedly vanished race. He assumes Chloe is an ordinary cat and brings her into his home, where she can observe far more than she should. Chloe needs to keep her human identity secret while trying to understand why an elven king is living in Magiford and what he is investigating.

The series uses a loose Hades and Persephone inspiration, but its setting is contemporary urban fantasy. Noctus has responsibilities tied to ancient magic and the elven world. Chloe has spent much of her life being dismissed or bullied because her powers look small beside vampires, werewolves, wizards, and fae. Their partnership puts both of them in the path of hidden enemies and old secrets.

The King's Captive starts with Chloe's cat disguise and her uneasy place in Noctus's household. The King's Shadow continues the mystery as they uncover more about the supernatural forces moving through the city. The stakes build toward conflicts involving magic, power, and the question of who can be trusted with either.

Chloe brings much of the humor. She is observant, hungry, determined to survive, and increasingly unwilling to accept the limits other people set for her. Noctus is more reserved, which gives their relationship a steady slow-burn rhythm. Their growing trust matters as much as the wider plot.

This is best read after Hall of Blood and Mercy and Court of Midnight and Deception if you want every Magiford connection. It can also work as a starting point for readers who like secret identities, supernatural investigations, protective heroes, and a heroine whose cat form keeps creating trouble.
