Series background & context
The Langley Sisters series is a Regency romance series about women who are pushed into a corner and choose a risky way out. After their father dies, the Langley sisters are left without money. By day, they are well-bred ladies. By night, they take part in a scandalous double life that helps them survive.
It is not the sort of behavior society forgives.
That premise gives the series its spark. The sisters know what is expected of them, but expectations do not pay bills or protect a family. They are clever, proud, and not always cautious. Their choices bring them into contact with powerful men who are intrigued, irritated, and eventually undone by them.
The books mix romance with secrets, disguise, danger, and class pressure. In Lady In Demand, for example, Phoebe Langley has a past that makes her anything but a conventional debutante, while the Marquess of Levermarch is exactly the kind of proper man she should probably avoid. Across the series, Vella keeps returning to the same question: what does a woman owe to society when society has offered her so little help?
The Langley sisters are connected, but each book gives one couple the spotlight. Expect bold heroines, protective heroes, hidden work, old wounds, and plenty of family loyalty. There is also a playful sense of scandal, because the sisters’ night-time activities and daytime manners are always on a collision course.
This is a good series for readers who like Regency romance where the women are active, resourceful, and not waiting politely to be rescued. Start at the beginning if you can, since the sisters’ shared situation and family bond are strongest when you see how it all begins.
