Series background & context

The Good Guys is Eric Ugland’s long‑running LitRPG saga about second chances, bad decisions, and building something worth protecting in a hostile world. It starts when a burned‑out ex‑soldier from Earth logs into iNcarn8, a game that promises a brand‑new life, and finds himself reborn in the fantasy realm of Vuldranni.

Inside the game he becomes Montana Coggeshall, a tank‑class warrior with ridiculous strength and a talent for getting in over his head. Early books follow Montana as he learns how stats, skills, and respawns really work while trying not to lose the blunt, stubborn core that made him who he is. Death is survivable, but trauma and guilt still come along for the ride.

The series quickly grows beyond simple dungeon crawls. Montana inherits a distant dukedom and stakes his claim in a remote valley that will become the holding of Coggeshall. Between Dungeon Mauling and Four: The Loot, you see him assemble a mismatched crew, clean out dangerous crypts, and start turning a logging camp into a real community.

That community is always under pressure. Night goblins share the valley, the Empire’s nobles see Coggeshall as a pawn, and ancient threats stir at the edges of the map. Books like Home, Siege Home, The Bare Hunt, and Eat, Slay, Love throw Montana into sieges, world‑ending monster hunts, and Fiends’ Night, when hell itself leaks into Vuldranni.

As the story moves on, town‑building blends with big‑picture politics. Montana’s choices in Coggeshall ripple all the way to the capital city of Glaton, where he must prove he deserves his title in Flex in the City and Of Slicing Men. Senate intrigues, scheming nobles, and meddling gods keep forcing him to choose between doing what is easy and what is right for his people.

Throughout, the tone stays fast and conversational. You get skill pop‑ups and loot drops, but also long, messy conversations about grief, loyalty, and the cost of power. Montana is often his own worst enemy, forgetting buffs or overcommitting, yet his stubborn urge to protect others keeps dragging him forward.

Later entries like Bad to the Throne and One Man’s Laughter tie his path to other series, especially The Bad Guys. Together they turn Vuldranni into a shared world with overlapping storylines and consequences that stretch far beyond one overpowered tank and his valley holding.
