Author bio

Eric Ugland writes the kind of stories he used to stay up late reading, just with more stats screens and weirder monsters.

He grew up in Seattle and, as he likes to joke, literally ran away to join the circus. After a few years of odd jobs and constant travel, he decided he wanted a different kind of chaos and moved to Manhattan. There, between city noise and long subway rides, he started taking his daydreams seriously and turned them into pages.

Those pages eventually became novels. Ugland’s first adventures followed Hunter Smith, a retired Marine who keeps getting dragged into global treasure hunts and conspiracies, starting with The Mexico Affair, Doctor Apocalypse, and The Sea Wolves’ Lair. They read like pulp adventure movies, full of plane crashes, lost bases, and professors who should never be left unsupervised.

His breakthrough came when he mashed that love of action together with video game mechanics. In One More Last Time, the opening to The Good Guys series, a burned out ex‑soldier wakes up inside the game world of Vuldranni and has to rebuild his life as tank‑class warrior Montana Coggeshall. The books mix dungeon crawls, town building, goblin wars, and the awkward reality of being wildly overpowered but still emotionally messy.

Ugland doubled down on that world with The Bad Guys, which follows Clyde Hatchett, a thief from New York reborn in the imperial capital of Glaton. Where Montana swings giant weapons and worries about his people, Clyde lies, steals, and negotiates his way through thieves’ guild politics, corpse‑kings, pirate voyages, and an election that could break the Empire. Later books like On a Throne of Lies and 2 Lies, 2 Thrones push that mix of street crime and high politics even further.

Away from Vuldranni, he writes darker, earthside stories. The Roseland books start with Home Is Where The Start Is, where ex‑Vegas dancer Ginger Mitchell returns to Portland after her mother’s suspicious “suicide” and stumbles into life as an unlicensed PI stalked by both gangsters and ghosts. In Tuesday’s Apocalypse, the first Dark Bureau Cases novel, a government janitor survives an encounter with an eldritch horror and gets drafted into a secret agency that cleans up potential world‑ending events.

Ugland’s work tends to circle the same ideas: second chances, found families, and people trying to do the right thing even when they are in way over their heads. His heroes crack jokes, make bad decisions, and keep going anyway. The tone can swing from gruesome to goofy in a page or two, which is part of why readers follow him across genres.

He treats writing like a job, showing up every day even when the words come slowly. When he gets stuck, he goes for a walk, talks to strangers, or sits with a coffee and a notebook until the next “what if?” lands. He’s known for answering reader questions, recommending other authors he enjoys, and admitting that his own path—from circus life to Manhattan to novelist in Los Angeles—still doesn’t entirely make sense to him.

These days he lives in Los Angeles, building out several series at once and occasionally popping up online to tease the next book. Whether it is LitRPG full of character sheets or a gritty Portland mystery, he keeps returning to the same promise: a story that moves, characters who feel human, and just enough absurdity to keep things fun.
