The Ghost books in chronological order
Series background & context
The Ghost novels take place in an alternate 1920s New York, a city of jazz, Prohibition, biplanes, coal-powered cars, and trouble that does not fit neatly into police files. The world shares some history with Mann's Newbury & Hobbes books, but the story has its own voice and its own city.
Gabriel Cross is a veteran carrying the damage of war into peacetime. By night he becomes the Ghost, a masked vigilante working against gangsters, killers, and supernatural forces that thrive in the cracks of the city. His friend Donovan and Ginny Gray are important parts of the world around him, giving the stories more than one way into the danger.
New York is loud. The secrets are louder.
Ghosts of Manhattan begins with a run of murders marked by ancient Roman coins and a threat tied to old power. Ghosts of War expands the consequences of the first book. Later, Ghosts of Karnak brings Egyptian mysteries and an old friend back into Gabriel's life, while Ghosts of Empire continues after that case.
These are pulp-inflected supernatural noir novels. Expect action, conspiracies, eccentric technology, and a hero who cannot simply walk away from people in danger. Start with Ghosts of Manhattan and continue in publication order for the clearest view of Gabriel's past and the changing stakes around him.
