Series background & context
The Newbury & Hobbes books are alternate-history detective stories set in a Victorian London where progress has taken a crooked turn. Airships cross the skyline, clockwork machines work in the streets, and the British Crown faces dangers that ordinary police work cannot handle.
Sir Maurice Newbury is an investigator for the Crown. He is brilliant, stubborn, and often too willing to push himself past a sensible limit. Veronica Hobbes is his assistant, a sharp observer with secrets and responsibilities of her own. Their partnership gives the series its shape: each investigation is a puzzle, but their growing trust matters just as much.
The first novel, The Affinity Bridge, sends them into a capital troubled by a plague that turns the dead violent, an airship crash, and pressure close to the throne. Later books bring Egyptian relics, murder cases, conspiracies, and the cost of the strange new technologies changing the city.
Victorian London is not just wallpaper here. Its class divisions, crowded streets, scientific ambition, and imperial confidence make the dangers feel larger. Mann uses the familiar detective setup to explore a world where the impossible has become another political problem.
Start with The Affinity Bridge. The main novels work best in publication order: The Osiris Ritual, The Immorality Engine, The Executioner's Heart, The Revenant Express, and The Albion Initiative. The cases usually have their own immediate mystery, but the character arcs and the changing state of the city build from book to book.
Expect steampunk, gothic horror, and brisk investigation rather than a purely historical mystery.
