Author bio
Peter McLean was born near London in 1972, the son of a bank manager and an English teacher. He grew up in Norfolk and went to school in the shadow of Norwich Cathedral, where making up stories was already a serious pastime.
Norwich stayed important to him. He has described growing up around the city's alternative scene, with martial arts, practical magic, and long nights in clubs all part of the mix. He began studying Taoist kung fu as a teenager, interests that later fed naturally into fiction full of rituals, dangerous bargains, and people who know how to handle themselves.
For a long time, writing ran alongside a very different working life.
McLean spent years in corporate IT, including data-centre outsourcing, before fiction became his full-time job. That experience seems to have sharpened his eye for systems, rules, chains of command, and the small ways ordinary people get trapped by institutions that don't care much about them.
His first novels were the Burned Man books, beginning with Drake. They follow Don Drake, a London hitman and reluctant occult fixer whose bad choices keep putting him in the path of demons, angels, and worse. Dominion and Damnation continue the story with noir humour, street-level magic, and a hero who is never quite as reformed as he would like to be.
Then came a major change of scenery.
With Priest of Bones, McLean moved into the world of the War for the Rose Throne. Tomas Piety returns from war to find his hometown, Ellinburg, transformed and his criminal business stolen. Across Priest of Lies, Priest of Gallows, and Priest of Crowns, the story grows from a fight for a few streets into a hard, political fantasy about power, loyalty, war, and the stories people tell themselves to live with what they have done.
His work often starts with people who have survived something and are now trying to take control of the next bad situation. Soldiers come home. Gang leaders build fragile families. Pilots, guardsmen, inquisitors, and occult criminals discover that the official plan is usually not enough. The violence can be blunt, but the books make room for gallows humour, affection between comrades, and the practical question of who has to clean up afterward.
McLean has also written short fiction in the Warhammer settings, including stories of Imperial Guard troops, Imperial Navy pilots, and the Chaos-haunted world of Warcry. Those commissions let him bring his interest in frontline workers and worn-out institutions into science fiction and fantasy settings built on enormous conflict.
He has kept expanding the Rose Throne world, too. Paved with Good Intentions follows Eline, a mother forced into the service of the Queen's Men after an act of vengeance puts her family at risk. It is a fresh starting point in the same bruised, politically unstable setting.
McLean lives in Norwich with his wife, Diane. He has also studied martial arts and magic, taught creative writing in a prison, and remained, by his own account, someone who makes up stories for a living.
