The Darkening Books in Order

The Darkening starts with an image that tells you almost everything about its mood: snow falling in the middle of summer while the light itself begins to fail. From there the books stay close to Nate Corwin, his wife Paula, their children, and the simple problem of getting somewhere warmer and safer before the world finishes turning strange.

What makes the duology work is that the threat is layered. There is the cold. There are the spores drifting down at night. There are the infected, who grow more dangerous as conditions worsen. And then there is the ordinary collapse that comes with any disaster story, the broken roads, frightened strangers, and the shrinking sense that rules still apply.

South becomes a strategy.

Across The Darkening and The Unraveling, the books follow the family's push toward Florida and whatever safety Paula's family farm might still offer. Scott keeps the focus practical. Light, shelter, movement, trust. That grounded survival logic makes the stranger parts of the setup land even harder.

If you want an apocalyptic story with a strong family thread and a lot of motion, this is a good late-period Scott series to pick up. It is brisk, bleak, and very clear about one thing: getting out alive is only the first problem.
