Series background & context

Broken Worlds opens with one of Scott's cleanest high-concept setups. Darius Drake is desperate to save his daughter Cassandra, so he turns to cryo-sleep for a chance at a future. When they wake, the place around them is cold, alien, and full of the signs that something has gone very wrong.

That first shock gives the series both its science fiction scope and its human core. However large the war becomes, Darius is still a father first. He keeps reading new worlds, new factions, and new powers through the question that matters most to him: how do I keep my daughter alive in a place neither of us understands?

That pressure never really lets up.

Across The Awakening, The Revenants, and Civil War, the books grow from survival mystery into a much wider conflict involving Cygnians, Revenants, and increasingly blurred lines between rescue, leadership, and control. Scott uses artifacts, transformations, and political maneuvering, but the emotional anchor stays with Darius and Cassandra.

If you like space opera with a parent-child bond at the center, this is one of Scott's better fits. The setting is large, the stakes keep expanding, and the series gets a lot of mileage out of making every big strategic decision feel uncomfortably personal.
