Series background & context
Dark Space is one of the big foundations of Jasper T. Scott's bibliography. Humanity has already been hammered by the Sythians, and the last refuge is a hidden sector known as Dark Space, once used as a place of exile and now turned into a crowded, suspicious, fragile shelter. That setup immediately gives the series a nice edge. The enemy is terrifying, but the humans are not exactly making life easy for one another either.
Ethan Ortane carries much of the story. He is an ex-con, a freelancer, and the kind of lead who makes mistakes for reasons that feel human rather than convenient. Between the Imperium, crime lord Alec Brondi, family complications, and the sheer pressure of a species-level war, Ethan is always trying to solve one problem while three more arrive.
Dark Space never stays still for long.
Across Dark Space, The Invisible War, Origin, Revenge, Avilon, Armageddon, and the prequel A Chance Encounter, the series keeps widening. It becomes about lost sectors, hidden tech, competing visions of order, and the ugly tradeoff between safety and freedom. Avilon, in particular, adds one of Scott's favorite questions: if paradise requires total control, is it still paradise?
If you want the series many of his later books echo back to, start here. It has fleet action, criminal politics, family drama, and enough worldbuilding to support a long run without feeling padded.
