These books work best if you like your paranormal stories a little messy. Gratton is interested in desire, grief, and the way power can feel beautiful right up until it stops feeling safe. The towns and rural landscapes matter, too. Missouri and Kansas are not just backdrops here. The woods, farms, graveyards, and back roads help create the uneasy mood.

There is romance, but it is never the only point. Blood magic is tied to family history, control, and the temptation to hurt in order to heal. That makes the series darker than its covers might first suggest.
