The United States of Asgard books ask a wonderfully odd question: what if America had grown up with the Norse gods as part of public life? In this world, the gods are not distant myths. They are celebrities, political forces, family legacies, and daily problems. The media tracks monsters. Prophets make headlines. Dragon hunts can become television.

The main arc begins with The Lost Sun. Soren Bearskin is a seventeen-year-old trying very hard not to turn into his father, a berserker whose battle frenzy ruined lives. When Baldur goes missing, Soren joins the young prophet Astrid Glyn on a road trip across this myth-soaked country, hoping the quest might also let him escape the violence waiting in his blood. That mix of action and self-reinvention is a big part of the series' appeal.

The second book, The Strange Maid, shifts to Signy Valborn, who has spent years preparing to become one of Odin's Valkyries. Her path depends on a riddle, a troll's heart, and a brutal journey across the ice of Canadia with the poet Ned the Spiritless and the now familiar Soren. By the time The Apple Throne arrives, the story pulls earlier threads back together and returns to Astrid, who has paid a steep magical price and is forced to break divine rules to go searching for Soren.

This is a country where destiny never travels alone.

Around the trilogy are the novellas Gold Runner, Lady Berserk, and Glory's Teeth, also collected in Weight of Stars. These widen the world rather than repeating the main plot. They give side characters and half-monsters more room, and they show how deep the mythic weirdness goes beyond the central trio.

The tone is contemporary and mythic at once. Cars, interviews, and road trips sit next to prophecies, trolls, and immortality apples. Gratton also keeps the focus on young people trying to define themselves outside the stories their parents, gods, or nations have already written for them.

If you like urban fantasy that feels genuinely inventive, with queer characters, messy loyalties, and gods who behave like terrible relatives, this series has a lot of fun with its premise.
