Series background & context

The Steve Dane Thriller books follow Steve Dane, an international adventurer and former intelligence operative who tends to find trouble wherever he travels. He is partnered with Nina Talikova, a former Russian agent and his lover. Together, they take on kidnappers, assassins, smugglers, corrupt officials, and the people trying to turn global crises into profit.

The relationship between Dane and Nina is a key part of the series. They are both trained, capable, and willing to call each other out. Their banter adds some lightness, but when a mission turns dangerous, they work as a serious two-person team.

The modern series begins with Skills to Kill. While in Italy, Dane witnesses the abduction of a young woman and agrees to help her father find her. The search takes him and Nina into a long-running vendetta, mafia violence, and a larger plot connected to a mysterious figure known as the Duchess. It is a useful introduction to both characters and to the globe-hopping scale of their adventures.

They rarely get to stay in one place for long.

In Another Way to Kill, Dane and Nina see a secret agent murdered in Monaco and become targets in a Russian plan to steal a powerful American weapon. The pursuit reaches Texas and the Gulf of Mexico, with old enemies and buried grievances complicating the job. Live to Kill brings Dane closer to the truth about his father while exposing someone inside the intelligence world who has been using agency resources for private ends.

Mine to Avenge shifts the focus to stolen Iraqi antiquities. Dane answers an old friend’s call for help, only to arrive after the friend has been killed. He and Nina investigate who took the artifacts and why, facing adversaries who know their methods unusually well. The series combines treasure-and-history stakes with the same spy-thriller momentum found in the earlier books.

Show No Mercy continues the Steve Dane sequence and keeps the focus on a hero who reacts quickly when criminals and powerful institutions leave ordinary people exposed. The books favor direct missions, rapid reversals, and settings that can change from an elegant European city to a remote danger zone in a few chapters.

Readers who enjoy a capable duo, international travel, and old-school action-adventure plotting should start with Skills to Kill. The earlier novel The Rogue Gentleman shares Dane and Nina’s opening Italy adventure, but Skills to Kill is the clearest on-ramp to the series listed here.
