Series background & context
Blaze! is a shared Western adventure series about Kate and J.D. Blaze, a married pair of gunfighters working in the American Old West. Brian Drake’s contribution, Blaze! Copper Mountain Kill, is the sixteenth book in the sequence. It drops the Blazes into a Montana mining war full of sabotage, murder, crooked lawmen, and outlaws.
Kate and J.D. are not quiet settlers waiting for someone else to solve the problem. They are professionals, partners, and a married couple who can handle a firearm as well as a tense negotiation. Their relationship gives the series a different shape from the usual lone-rider Western. They face danger together, argue when needed, and rely on each other when the odds turn ugly.
In Blaze! Copper Mountain Kill, rival Copper Kings are battling for control in Montana. Kate and J.D. are hired to investigate the attacks plaguing the mines, but the job quickly turns deadlier than expected. The trail leads to corrupt authority figures, the violent Lion Gang, and a runaway train carrying enough dynamite to destroy everyone involved.
It is a Western with a thriller engine.
The setting matters because the book uses the pressure points of a mining region: wealth concentrated in a few hands, workers and communities caught in the middle, and isolated places where powerful people can try to set their own rules. The Blazes arrive as outsiders, which allows them to challenge the local arrangement without being tied to its old loyalties.
Drake’s installment is a good match for readers who like his modern thrillers but want a change of era. The pace remains quick, the villains are dangerous, and the central problem keeps escalating. The technology may be different, but the story still runs on pursuit, danger, conspiracy, and a couple determined not to leave innocent people at the mercy of criminals.
The wider Blaze! series is written by multiple authors, so individual books can function as separate adventures. You can read Blaze! Copper Mountain Kill on its own if Drake is your reason for visiting. Readers who want the full ongoing history of Kate and J.D. Blaze may prefer to begin with the first Blaze! book and work forward.
Expect frontier action, mystery, and high-stakes set pieces, with Kate and J.D. at the center of the trouble.
