Series background & context
Brian Drake’s Sam Raven series follows a former intelligence operative whose past has left him with enemies, allies, and plenty of unfinished business. Raven is skilled, guarded, and often working outside the comfort of official support. He tends to get pulled into cases because someone needs help, a friend is in danger, or a threat has grown too serious to ignore.
Terminal Memory introduces him alongside ex-CIA officer Mara Cole. Three years after escaping a jihadist camp, Mara is being hunted again. Raven has his own reasons for tracking the people after her, and their search carries them from London and Marseille to Afghanistan. The case leads back to Mara’s broken memories and a conspiracy tied to American intelligence.
Raven does not get a quiet life after that.
The series has a broad international footprint. Lady Death brings Raven into contact with Tanya Jafari, an operative who says she can expose a growing terrorist organization if she receives protection. The War Business starts with a request from Raven’s Iraq War comrade Aaron Osborne, then expands into a scheme that could trigger violence across Europe. In The Kill Fever, Raven protects a thief named Megan after her latest score puts killers and intelligence personnel on her trail.
Raven sometimes works with a close, imperfect group of former associates known as the Raiders. They matter in No Name On My Grave, when Raven learns of a plan to destabilize the United States from within. Other books put him in more personal conflicts. In Bullet Alley, an old girlfriend’s warning pulls him into a murder investigation involving his former best friend. Vengeance Strike begins with a cartel hit in Colombia and becomes a hunt for the people who betrayed Raven and his team.
The later novels keep the pressure high. Raven investigates a possible alliance between a former CIA officer and a Spanish cartel in Blood Mist. In The Murder Mind, he and CIA operative Tracy Donahue pursue stolen nuclear components and a blackmail plot. The Dark Passage sends Raven into the Balkan underworld after a badly injured undercover operative is found in a cartel compound.
Expect a hard-edged, fast-moving thriller series. The stories feature covert operations, cartels, terror plots, corrupt officials, and people who know how to survive a fight. Raven can be ruthless, but he is also defined by loyalty to the people caught in the damage.
The books work as standalone missions, though Terminal Memory is the right entry point. It explains Raven’s history, introduces the emotional weight he carries, and sets the tone for everything that follows.
