Stanley Books in Order

Stanley is a big-hearted dog with a big appetite, a powerful nose, and very little interest in the household rules. The Stanley series tells its stories from his point of view, where people are lovable but confusing creatures and almost every forbidden thing looks like a terrific idea.

He means well. Usually.

The first book, Stanley's Party, begins when Stanley is left at home and decides that one paw on the couch cannot possibly hurt. There is also Stanley's Little Sister, in which a new cat joins the household and tests Stanley's patience. Every book has a simple setup that grows into cheerful chaos.

The setting is the everyday world of yards, parks, streets, schools, boats, and dog shows. What makes it special is Stanley's interpretation of that world. A skateboard-like object becomes an invitation. An abandoned sandwich becomes a journey. A school is full of exciting smells, lunch, and children who seem delighted to meet a group of dogs, at least until the chase begins.

Stanley is not a sleek or clever hero. He is a lovable, enthusiastic lab with an outsized confidence in his own decisions. His friends are game for adventure, and Fluffy the cat adds a more watchful, unimpressed energy when she enters the series. The people are mostly off to the side, trying to restore order after Stanley has done what he felt needed doing.

These are warm, funny picture books with plenty for a read-aloud audience to notice. The humor comes from the gap between dog logic and human logic, as well as Stanley's calm certainty that he has done nothing wrong. Under all the mischief, he is loyal to his friends and genuinely excited by life.

Start with Stanley's Party to meet him at home, then continue in publication order for his biggest adventures. Each book can stand alone, but reading several makes the recurring jokes and Stanley's unstoppable personality even more satisfying. It is a series for dog lovers, rule-benders, and anyone who has suspected that pets are having much more interesting days than the rest of us.
